You Know You’re Broke When…

Rants & Musings

Have you ever heard the name Jeff Foxworthy? He’s host of the popular game show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” He originally gained his popularity as a standup comic using his signature one liners which began with the statement, “you know you’re a redneck when…”

I hope Jeff Foxworthy won’t mind if I borrow his idea for this article. The title of this post is “You know you’re broke when…” because there are some telltale signs which indicate whether or not you’re broke and more importantly, whether or not you’ll stay that way.

I think you’ll find this piece interesting so, without further ado, let’s get right to it.

You know you’re broke when…

you talk with others about wages, not profits. Broke people rely upon this antiquated thing called a job to maintain their lifestyle. When you have a job you’re an employee and employees are wage driven.

A wealthy person on the other hand is more than likely a business owner. Entrepreneurs strive for business profits and see wages for what they are; a dead end.

Broke people work for wages, wealthy people work for profits.

You know you’re broke when…

you have a person in your life called a boss deciding how much income you’ll receive. Wealthy people have themselves deciding how much income they’ll receive.

Broke people get a raise in wages because their boss decides to give them one. Wealthy people get a raise in their profits because they’ve decided to make it happen.

You know you’re broke when…

you file your tax return as soon after January 1st as possible. When you do so you’re gleefully waiting to see how much of your own money the government is going to give back to you…interest free of course.

Wealthy people file their tax return as close to the April 15th filing deadline as possible. Wealthy people almost always owe taxes and they do not want to give the government their money a day sooner than they have to.

You know you’re broke when…

you’re spending more time every week watching TV than reading books. Wealthy people know that time is the most valuable asset they have and choose not to waste any of it on watching TV excessively. Rather, they invest their time wisely into good quality business and personal development books.

You know you’re broke when…

you’re making payments toward credit card balances every month. Wealthy people pay off the entire credit card balance every month.

Broke people make credit card payments just trying to manage their debt from month to month. Wealthy people do not carry credit card debt forward.

You know you’re broke when…

you spend more time planning your annual two weeks of vacation than planning how to grow your bank account. Wealthy people love to take vacations just as much as anybody else. But, they also know that when they put a sufficient amount of time into planning how to grow their bank account, they can then take more vacations…many, many, many more vacations.

If you’ve just read this somewhat sardonic article and it’s made you a bit uncomfortable, then, guess what, you’re broke.

On the other hand, if you’ve read it and it’s made you chuckle then congratulations, chances are real good you’re wealthy. Or, you’re at least well on your way to becoming wealthy.

If you did not get a chuckle out of this article then it’s time for you to fix your situation. You’ve only got one shot at this lifetime of yours. Do you want to waste it on being something less then you’re capable of?

Or would you rather live the life of freedom and abundance that you so richly deserve? The choice is entirely yours.

You can go to sleep tonight and wake up tomorrow morning and start your routine all over again. Or, you can make this your turning point. You can use what you’ve just read to make now the time for a positive transformation. Nobody’s gonna do it for you, only you can do it for yourself.

Reading a good quality book is the very best way to get started down the road to your transformation from being broke to becoming wealthy. How to become wealthy all starts with you. For free, immediate access to my personal development success book please visit http://www.APlumInTheSyrup.com/

Great article Dan – and very true too – I would venture to add that you know your broke when you wake up in the morning and have to be somewhere at a certain time because you have been told to and you feel as though you are desperate for that feeling of freedom!

    thanks Dan

Thanks Carol. Yours is a very good point. There are lots of signs to tell you that you’re broke. As long as you know what just a few of them are you can go about fixing things.

Hello Daniel, thanks a lot for your e-mails, I have appreciated them so far. But on on this one, I think you missed.

For it comes across as if people with wealth, are the ones that are successful. But, I\’m not to sure if it was in one of your books were I saw the famous phrase from Bob Dylan: The successful person is the one that wakes up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between, did what they love. His message has nothing to do with wealth, but I agree with that more than your discription of being successful. And that philosophy has made him wealthy.

Of course, I\’m not being naive about the importance of money. But I know so many people with wealth that live lifes that are worthy of pitty, to put it in a nice way. Then of course I study the life of people that have given up their wealth to live simple lifes, and those are considered the greates man that ever lived.

For example, Gandhi, who was a highly educated person of a priviliged background, but dicided to leave it all to do what he loved, and I consider him one of the most successful man that ever lived. And we can\’t leave out Jesus, who with his abilities could have been the richest person that ever lived. But he dicided to live a simple life and I believe him to be the greatest man that ever lived. They both touched so many people and if people followed their example this would be a different world.

On another note, I agree with you in that we have to be envolved in personal development, but when helping others, we have to be careful because instead of building them up, we could be tearing them down. I believe that being negative and calling others, from your view point, a \"broken man\" can\’t possibly help their moral.

Remember, the video you send me about the paradyme, other wise knowned as the heart; that is what we want to change. But in order to reach the hearts we have to make them medite and move their emotions with possitive thoughts that not only built them up but also moves them to action.

Well, that\’s just my humble opinion, thanks for taking the time to read this, and keep up the good work.

    David

    Hey Dan
I almost opted not to add anything. I think you’re broke if you’ve taken time to read this. The subject matter suggests that you should have better use for your reading time, except of course if you have the time and want to read what your friend has to say.
    Cheers

LOL – hey Martin, always great to hear from you. OK, excuse my ignorance but I’m not too sure how to interpret your comments. Are you giving me a pat on the back for a good post or are you telling me you’ve just wasted 5 minutes by reading it? [Chuckle], either way my friend I can handle your feedback. Hope you’re well.

Hi David – thanks for the thoughtful commentary. I’ve written in my book that wealth and success are two completely different things. There are tons of people out there who have money but are miserable and plenty who have not much and are happy. Money DOES NOT equal success. But, this post is about having many vs not having any. It is not about being successful vs unsuccessful. Let’s face it, money is a very important part of life, our very survival depends on it.

    Great article Dan

Hi Dan, from what I got in your article, you are basically saying it is fruitful to spend our time on developmental items. Meaning we should spend more (if not all of it) time on something that puts money into our banck accounts as opposed to something that takes it away. Sounds a good another good article among the many you have written.

Keep up the good work Dan!

    Thanks, Sosten.

Thanks Sosten – but remember, we all need to play a little too. There’s nothing wrong with watching some TV say or reading a trashy novel. My only point is to keep that kind of stuff to a minimum. It should go without saying that the majority of your time is better used on productive activities.
